Integrating Nature and Technology at the Frontline of Innovation

Located in Osaka, the Software Industry Plaza TEQS serves as a hub supporting businesses that harness cutting-edge technologies. As part of the renovation of 5G X LAB OSAKA, an innovation space within the facility, we proposed and installed a work by Matsui Shota. Through Matsui’s artwork, which encapsulates stones collected from riverbanks in acrylic, we have created a space that harmonizes nature with technological innovation. The integration of art within this environment introduces a new layer of creativity to a site devoted to advancing next-generation businesses utilizing 5G and other emerging technologies.

5G X LAB OSAKA was established through a collaborative agreement on “Creating 5G-Related Businesses” between the City of Osaka, SoftBank Corp., and the AIDOR Consortium. In response to a request to introduce art as part of the facility’s renovation, Masui Shinichiro proposed and oversaw the installation of a work by artist Shota Matsui.

Born out of a vision to create a business support center in the Kansai–Osaka region dedicated to 5G technologies, 5G X LAB OSAKA brings together state-of-the-art products and services that offer a glimpse into a future society powered by 5G innovation. With Matsui’s work, encapsulating natural stones in acrylic, we have created a space where nature and technology coexist in harmony.

Through the work of an Osaka-born artist, the project evokes a seamless connection between local communities, technology, and the natural environment, incorporating the potential of art to illuminate new paths forward.

MATSUI Shota

Born in Kyoto in 1994, he received his BFA in Sculpture from Kyoto City University of Arts in 2018 and is currently based in Kyoto. Matsui incorporates unprocessed stones in his three-dimensional works out of his primary interest in their natural beauty and physical weight. He has recently been developing wall art versions for stone to be appreciated indoors. In his process, he uses modern materials (resin, glass, etc.) to shed a new perspective while paying attention to how they aesthetically appear, like how stone is valued in the traditional art of Suiseki.

He bases his works’ prices on the size of the stones, similar to how Yapese stone money is valued based on their physical size, as the larger the stones, the more difficult it is to balance and create the artwork.
