Comprehensive Direction of an Exhibition in Hong Kong in Response to the Client’s Request

Code-a-Machine, in collaboration with the Hong Kong/Shanghai-based planning firm Sage House, produced Tsuda Shohei’s solo exhibition at chi K11 Art Space in the Hong Kong K11 shopping mall. Invited to participate by Sage House, which K11 had already commissioned to plan exhibitions, we proposed and commissioned Japanese artist Tsuda Shohei. Responding to the client’s request for “an interactive and colorful exhibition,” Tsuda created a dynamic show incorporating local materials and visuals shot in Hong Kong. In collaboration with Tsuda, Code-a-Machine oversaw the entire process from research to production direction, focusing on the visitor experience.

K11 Art Mall, a unique shopping complex that integrates art and retail, features a dedicated art space for special exhibitions, as well as displaying artworks throughout the facility. Invited to participate by Sage House, which had already been commissioned by K11 to plan an exhibition, we proposed and commissioned Japanese artist Tsuda Shohei. We also supported the creation process, assisting with research and practical coordination.

Tsuda and Code-a-Machine collaboratively developed the exhibition plan through research and discussions in Hong Kong. Tsuda’s practice is rooted in extensive research and takes shape through architectural materials, as well as the environment and memory. In Hong Kong, he was struck by “the impression of the way land and nature overlap with urban activities” when observing the city’s landscape, where skyscrapers rise abruptly from the mountains. Seen through the perspective of a foreign artist, the exhibition brings to light a latent potential of the region.

Responding to the client’s request for “an interactive and colorful exhibition” that a wide range of K11 visitors could enjoy, we created a variety of installations. These included works using architectural materials Tsuda collected during his research, such as golden sheets and colorful leveling strings, as well as installations projecting the Hong Kong landscape onto a floating paper structure. Code-a-Machine comprehensively supported the entire process, from exhibition planning to execution, coordinating among the artist, the client, and the fabricators.

Tsuda is an artist, an experimental architect, a graphic artist, and head of the noise music record label UNNOISELESS, as well as a member of the video production group IN/AWT.
Tsuda carries out experiments that explore the existence of the individual within a space, and inverts the conscious and the unconscious by creating work that focuses on and expansion of existing phenomena.
His works, created as if by weaving together multidimensional spaces, always include architectural elements such as dismantling, measuring, and reconstruction.
