The Shanghai Urban Space Art Season’ is a triennale focused on regional redevelopment. The festival is divided into an art area, overseen by Kitagawa Fram, and an architecture area, organized by faculty from Tongji University. In collaboration with Art Front Gallery, Masui Shinichiro provided comprehensive supervision of the Maoma Warehouse art area, overseeing everything from artwork placement to the signage plan.
Masui was involved in the project from the artist selection stage, proposing Chinese artists, which led to the inclusion of YANG Mushi’s work. He carefully arranged the works of 18 Chinese artists, taking into account the natural light streaming through the windows and the characteristics of each medium. While communicating with the artists, he worked alongside the construction team to realize the exhibition space. Bathed in natural light, the works appear to float in a space slightly different from a conventional museum environment.
To enhance the visitor experience, Masui incorporated strategically placed spotlights that provided clearer guidance along the path, while creating a sense of anticipation similar to entering a theater. In addition, he designed the information center from initial sketches, refining it to meet functional requirements while maintaining harmony with the exhibition space.
From artist selection to on-site construction supervision, Masui supported the project at every stage. His involvement ensured not only an effective layout for presenting the artworks but also the practical flexibility required to successfully realize the festival.
