Shinagawa combines the traditional style of Japanese wall paintings using gold leaf with abstract shapes to emphasize the design aspect of his work. If you look closely, you can see that the white flowers are depicted like a single-stroke drawing. The work also evokes the casual and stylish flavor of spray-painted graffiti. While Shinagawa is certainly working with a new type of Japanese painting, we can also see that these types of highly designed art are in line with the Rinpa school and other traditional Japanese aesthetics.
